# Register with the Police (International students)
The UK Government asks that students from certain countries register with the police upon arrival in the UK. Use this guide to find out how and where you can complete police registration.
# Check if you need to register
To see if your home country is listed (and if you need to register with the police), go to the GOV.UK website (opens new window) to find out.
If you applied outside the UK
Check your visa ‘vignette’ (sticker in your passport). You must register if it has Police registration or Register with police in 7 days of entry on it.
If you applied inside the UK
Check the letter you get from the Home Office when your application’s approved. It will tell you if you must register.
If you do not register, your permission to stay might be shortened and you will have to leave the UK. You can also be stopped from getting or extending a UK visa in future.
# Book an appointment at Digbeth Police station
If you need to register, you must go to the police registration point within 7 days of you:
- arriving in the UK if you applied for a visa from outside the UK
- getting your biometric residence permit (opens new window) if you applied to stay for longer from inside the UK
The Police registration point for students living in Coventry is Digbeth Police station (opens new window) in Birmingham – where you will need to book an appointment before you visit. To book an appointment, you will need to create an account on the West Midlands Police overseas visitor registration (opens new window) page.
If there are no available appointments within seven days, please book the earliest available appointment.
When looking for an appointment, please make sure that you check Digbeth Desk 1 and Digbeth Desk 2 as there will be appointments listed for both.
# Take the correct documents to your appointment
Check that you have the necessary documents (opens new window) and remember to take them to your appointment.
# Go to Digbeth Police station
Once you have an appointment and the correct documents, you can go to Digbeth Police station (which is a short walk from Birmingham New Street train station). Google Maps route (opens new window).
Make sure you arrive at your appointment on time. Digbeth Police ask that you do not arrive more than 10 minutes before, or more than one hour after your scheduled appointment, as you will not be seen.
# Show your Police Registration Certificate to the International Student Compliance (ISC) team
The police will give you a registration certificate. Keep it while your visa or permission to stay in the UK lasts so that you can:
- prove that you’re registered with the police
- tell the police if your details change (opens new window)
- return to the UK if you travel
- apply to stay for longer in the UK
Remember to show your registration certificate to the ISC team in the Student Centre (Room SC11, 11:00 – 13:00 or 14:00 – 16:00, Monday – Friday) or scan a good copy to ISC.firstname.lastname@example.org once you have received/updated it.
